WHAT IS THE GIRL POWER CONFERENCE?
Girl Power is a one-day conference for 6th and 7th grade girls in San Jacinto Valley schools sponsored by Soroptimist San Jacinto-Hemet Valley. The day will include a series of speakers, activities and presentations to provide girls with opportunities to learn, grow and succeed. The objectives of the conference are to:
· Teach girls about career choices, available educational programs and community activism
· Introduce girls to networking with adult women, high-school age girls, and girls in their age bracket from other schools
· Encourage girls to plan for their future by learning to set goals and objectives
· Demonstrate how to chart a career path from a broad range of choices
· Share ways to promote a healthy and diverse life and community involvement
· Promote the development of women as leaders in our society
WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE CONFERENCE TAKE PLACE?
Girl Power 2015 will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Hemet Public Library-Second Floor, 300 E. Latham Avenue, Hemet, CA. Check-in for participants will take place between 8:00-9:00 AM. The conference program will start at 9:00 AM and end at 3:30 PM. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the conference.
HOW MANY GIRLS WILL ATTEND THE CONFERENCE?
Approximately 250 girls in 6th and 7th grades classes in both public and private schools in San Jacinto Valley will attend.
WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA FOR SELECTION TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE?
Girls in 6th and 7th grade classes will be selected based on good standing/good citizenship at school, demonstrated interest in or potential for leadership, and demonstrated interest in helping others and/or volunteering in school or community.
HOW ARE PARTICIPANTS SELECTED?
School counselors and teachers will select/recommend girls they believe would benefit from attending the Girl Power Conference.
WHAT TYPE OF ACTIVITIES ARE CONDUCTED AT THE CONFERENCE?
The conference program features several outstanding speakers on topics including career choice, teen wellness, living a life of service, and beauty, fashion and image. An anti-bullying program video will also be presented. Participants will also take part in creative and recreational activities throughout the day, including a team building exercise. Breakfast and lunch are provided.
HOW IS THE CONFERENCE SUPERVISED?
The conference is supervised by an all-volunteer Soroptimist staff consisting of approximately 20 members. There will also be 32 adult women and 32 high school-age girl volunteers trained to serve as table monitors and discussion leaders. Each table of 8 girls will have an assigned discussion leader and table monitor.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS TO PARTICIPANTS?
There is no cost to the conference participants. Costs for the conference are funded by community sponsors and a grant from Soroptimist International of the Americas.
